| If variety is the spice of life, then Fiji is diving's red hot chilli pepper. Trying to sum up the special appeal of these waters is like packing a bag for an epic journey through four seasons - or editing years of underwater video into just 30 minutes of tape! There is simply no way to fit everything in. Fiji is to diving what New Orleans is to jazz, Paris is to cuisine, and New York is to nightlife. Exciting, charismatic, unique and, most of all, vibrantly colorful. But unlike these big cities, the only bustling crowds you’ll find in Fiji are the wall-to-wall, jam-packed coral, fish and critter communities on these pristine South Pacific reefs. Every destination has a signature scene: Cocos – hammerheads; Chuuk – wrecks; Bahamas – dolphins. However, with its 330 islands surrounded by reefs and the entire spectrum of tropical underwater terrain, Fiji is impossible to sum up with a single image. But from the sharks, rays and 1000 species of fish to the soft corals, sea stars and myriad shrimp, one word does describe Fiji’s extremely diverse diving: color.
Fiji is the color of our dreams – our wildest, most vivid and surrealistic dreams. |

Moody's Namena
Namena Island is surrounded by the vast Namena Barrier Reef which is now the Namena Marine Reserve. The diving (and snorkeling) in the Namena Barrier Reef varies from walls to bommies to swim-throughs; both hard and soft corals are prolific. On a dive one can see lionfish, leaf scorpionfish, pelagics, and a score of reef fishes, nudibranchs, eels and more.
The Namena Barrier Reef extends approximately 20 miles from the southern shores of Vanua Levu into the Koro Sea so at various places of the barrier reef you will have sheer wall drop-offs (Grand Canyon is about a mile deep). On the south side of the reef it ranges from sloping walls to breaks with sea mounts locally called bommies. Most widely-known bommies are the Chimneys and Blue Ribbon Eel. |
